We celebrate diversity within our team, which includes individuals from various backgrounds and skill sets. We are supported by an amazing group of volunteers and colleagues from the Advisory Panel who help us provide excellent service to everyone we work with.

  • Sindiso Nyathi

    My journey with WERS began back in 2011 when I started as a volunteer in our popular clothing shop. Over the years, I have been actively involved with WERS on several projects and joined the Advisory Panel in 2021.

    I bring valuable experience and insights to my current role as an Administrative Assistant, where I am responsible for coordinating our office, data collection and the delivery of the Life on Hold Project. This role allows me to contribute my passion for our mission and make a meaningful impact on our community.

  • Emma Ross

    Leading the WERS’ Skillsmatch Programme, we are intending to enhance the skills and capabilities of people seeking asylum and refugees, by collaborating with partner organisations.

    My previous voluntary experience in Cambodia, France, Uganda and The Jordan, coupled with my education in Arabic and Middle Eastern Studies, enables me to appreciate and work with a diverse range of cultures and sectors.

  • Heather Andrews

    As a Support Worker I bring a background of teaching, education and training experience as we significantly strengthen the drop-in service and case management at WERS.

    My experience in providing psychosocial support to people seeking asylum and refugees with Lifting Hands International as well as supporting the Grootbos Foundation inclusivity through sport program, provides me with complimentary experience in this role and with the development of the WERS' Befriending (Buddying) programme.

  • Kareem Kalthoum

    Coming from a background in which I had to adjust to a new life and a new country at 14, I can truly empathise with the hurdles faced by people from displaced and difficult backgrounds. This helps me apply my experience in my role as Activities and Connections Coordinator to collaborate with local organisations and implement a diverse spectrum of activities to improve overall wellbeing.

    My experience at Newcastle University in Chairing the Student (Union) Arab Society and as Sports Project Lead for the North East Solidarity Training, provides helpful learnings to this role.

    My primary goal as a Scotswood Garden Link Worker is to foster connections between refugees and people seeking sanctuary through engaging garden activities.

    I am deeply passionate about the power of nature and its ability to unite people from diverse backgrounds. My journey with WERS began in 2020 when I volunteered through the Skillsmatch programme and since then, I have been dedicated to nurturing this meaningful collaboration.

  • Folusho Folasade

    As a Support Worker and immigrant from Nigeria my focus is strengthening the WERS support function and ensure the charity provides a supportive environment through our Weekly Welcomes.

    WERS emphasis on empowerment and advocating the rights of refugees resonates with my passion for social justice and utilises my experience and skills as a Mental Support Worker for this role.

    Mimihemba Nwokeh

    During my MA in Peace, Conflict and Development at the University of Bradfordd, I established and led the University of Bradford British Red Cross Society, successfully fundraising for flood and earthquake victims. As a Solicitor and Advocate, I handled sensitive cases, ensuring confidentiality and supporting a minor in a violation case. My national youth service as a legal aid officer involved representing those who couldn't afford legal services.

    As a Support Worker at WERS, I am eager to apply my diverse skills to provide empathetic assistance, drawing from my legal background and passion for aiding vulnerable individuals, ensuring a supportive environment for those seeking refuge.

    My commitment to advocating for the rights of refugees and asylum seekers stems from my personal journey. Fuelled by a desire to improve the asylum process, I am dedicated to ensuring that individuals facing similar challenges receive the necessary support and resources.

    With a passion to challenge the status quo, I bring a unique perspective to the Support Work team, striving to create a more compassionate and efficient provision of support for those seeking refuge in the North East.

    Alison Cheesman

    With a background as a Development Coordinator in a charity in the USA, I bring a unique perspective to my role at WERS.

    As the Community Events and Fundraising Officer my focus is on organising community events that not only bring people together but also shed light on the experiences of people seeking safety and refugees. I am committed to working closely with community groups, fostering collaborations and taking the lead on innovative digital fundraising initiatives to further support the essential work of WERS.

  • Shaunagh Caroll

    Leading our fundraising efforts for WERS, my true passion lies in supporting those who seek sanctuary. My role involves actively contributing to the delivery of WERS' strategic vision by generating essential income and collaborating closely with our Leadership Team.

    With more than 30 years of experience in the voluntary sector, I have had the privilege of leading fundraising teams for both national and local charities.

    Lesley Ferguson

    I bring expertise as a former bursar of a residential school and finance director of a housing association. Currently I am also serving as the Treasurer of the West Northumberland Food Bank.

    As a member of Leadership Team at WERS, I am dedicated to steering the charity towards long-term sustainability by strategically managing finances and resources. Through financial oversight, I aim to establish a robust foundation that ensures WERS can continue its vital mission of people seeking sanctuary and refugees in the North East.

    As Chief Executive, I am responsible for supporting WERS’ future strategy and plans, informed by lived experience of the asylum system. My background includes driving transformative change and maximising organisational potential, particularly in developing countries.

    My career includes major collaborations in Africa, Asia and Australia, which has providing me with valuable insights to improve the lives of people seeking asylum and refugees.

  • Andy (Andrzej) Durma

    As Head of Corporate Services, I am supporting the transformation of our cutting-edge programmes through dedicated infrastructure and responsibility for finance, communications and evaluation of our work.

    As a migrant from Poland and experience gained in the hospitality sector, I am fortunate been able to apply my transferrable skills to this role, enhancing the client experience.
