Your Legacy, Their Future

Legacy giving is an easy and impactful step you can take to help us make a difference.
A gift left in your will to WERS can make a positive lasting impact on the lives of people who have fled persecution and danger and are trying to start a new life here. You can help them take the next step on their journey.

What is a legacy gift?

Legacy gifts are planned donations that designate a part of an individual’s estate to a chosen charity. There are different kinds of legacy gifts:

  • Residuary gift: A residue (or a share of the residue) of the estate that is gifted. The residue is whatever is left after all debts, funeral expenses, certain other costs, and tax and any other legacies have been deducted.

  • Pecuniary gift: A fixed sum of money that is gifted. The value of a pecuniary gift will decrease over time due to inflation and rising costs of living.

  • Specific gift: A particular named item, for example, a piece of jewellery, furniture, a painting, buildings, land, house contents, shares, etc that is gifted.

Why leave a gift?

Every gift enables WERS to make a difference to local refugees and asylum seekers, whether it be helping them to link up with a befriender, giving them crucial advice and help with everyday difficulties, or providing a cash payment to a destitute asylum seeker with no other means of support. Every little bit helps us achieve our mission of supporting people seeking sanctuary in the North East!

There are also additional benefits to consider. Legacy giving can result in reductions in inheritance tax for example.

Most importantly, legacy giving through your will can provide great peace of mind. It’s reassuring to know that the people and causes you care about will be taken care of in the future.

How do I leave a legacy gift?

It is easy to remember WERS in your will. All you need is:

  • Our Registered Charity Number: 1077601 (England)

Your solicitor will have the correct wording to use. You can leave a specific sum of money or a percentage gift, which can be 1% or greater. Updating your will can take just a few minutes, but the difference it will make will last a lifetime.
