From Ethiopia to the North East: Mebrat’s SkillsMatch Success!

Meet Dr. Mebrat Teklemariam Gebrekidan, a passionate conservationist with a PhD in Ecology and Systematic Zoology from Ethiopia. Through the SkillsMatch Programme, she was matched with mentor Judie, who shares her background in wildlife conservation. Together, they explored ways for Mebrat to gain experience in the UK’s environmental sector.

Now, Mebrat volunteers with Durham Wildlife Trust, Tyne Derwent Way, and the Wild Oyster Project, contributing her skills to real conservation work while building valuable UK experience. 🐝🌱

She recently shared her insights in a blog for Tyne Derwent Way — “Nurturing Nature: How Grassland Restoration Supports Biodiversity Conservation” — celebrating the importance of protecting grasslands and local wildlife.

We’re so proud of Mebrat and the difference she’s making through SkillsMatch — showing how the right support can help talent and passion flourish! 💚✨
