Informs and Co-ordinates with WERS Senior Management Team, staff and volunteers
Working Hours 25-30 Hours per week Monday to Thursday (as agreed with the Director) with at least two days per week in the office, ideally on Mondays and Wednesdays to oversee the existing drop-in provision.   During Covid-19 restrictions the role will require a mixture of home and office working.
Salary £30,000 pro rata
Direct report(s) for task direction and performance Support workers (2 part time posts) and 5 volunteers

WERS is looking for an experienced Project Manager to join the Senior Management Team at WERS to lead the support work function. This is an exciting opportunity to be part of reshaping how WERS supports and creates opportunities for asylum seekers and refugees on Tyneside. About WERS

West End Refugee Service is a registered charity supporting asylum seekers and refugees in the North East of England. Our range of integrated services aim to tackle disadvantage, poverty, discrimination and isolation experienced by those we support. Our services include advocacy and advice via drop-ins and outreach work, a hardship fund for destitute asylum seekers, practical support for those experiencing poverty, a befriending project, a supported volunteer project for clients and an awareness raising programme. WERS aims to empower men and women, whose futures have been irrevocably changed by past events in their home country, to regain control of their lives and fulfil their potential.

The Support Work Manager Role

Working with the Director, and the senior team, you will implement the findings of a recent review of the Support Work Function to create a user-led model that offers support and opportunities, whilst championing the rights of asylum seekers and refugees. You will work strategically with key partners in the sector to address inequalities and issues in the system, and creates projects that bring about positive change for the people who engage with them.

Main Responsibilities

  1. WERS Senior Management team

As part of the team you will:

  1. Ensure the successful delivery of the mission and strategic objectives of the service.
  2. Support the successful day to day running of the organisation.
  3. Champion the values of the organisation.
  4. Adhere to the behaviours agreed by the Senior Management team.

You will:

  • Manage, support and develop existing support work staff (2 part time posts) and volunteers (5 support work & triaging volunteers) in dealing with day-to-day casework and client support.
  • Adopt workflow and triage models.
  • Contribute to staff and volunteer training.
  • Contribute to the development of a new CRM.
  • Work with the people WERS supports to shape projects and practice.
  • Implement a model that champions the rights of asylum seekers and refugees.
  • Work strategically with key partners in the sector to address inequalities in the system.
  • Undertake any other tasks or duties that may reasonably be required in relation to support work.
  • Uphold the mission, vision and values of WERS.

Person Specification

We are looking for someone with a positive and proactive approach who really enjoys working in a team. We work with a client group who experience significant challenges and hardship and we work at pace. We are a small charity with big impact. You will be comfortable communicating sensitively with a broad range of people from clients, partners, funders, supporters and to volunteers. You can foster positive partnerships and work under pressure managing multiple priorities. You will be joining WERS at an exciting time. You will be involved in the development of new projects and new ways of working. 


  1. Commitment to the work of WERS tackling the challenges faced by asylum seekers and refugees in UK.
  2. Significant experience of working with asylum seekers and refugees or vulnerable people in a similar setting.
  3. A commitment to diversity, equality, and inclusion.
  4. Excellent communication skills, both written and oral, with the ability to communicate sensitively and engagingly with a broad range of people at all levels.
  5. Experience of managing multi-faceted projects.
  6. Experience of and interest in taking a user-led approach in developing projects.
  7. Experience of demonstrating and measuring project impact.
  8. Excellent IT skills and experience of managing budgets.
  9. The ability to take a creative and solution focused approach to work.
  10. Strong data literacy skills, which mean you are confident capturing and using insight to help inform decision making and making change happen.
  11. The ability to help build consensus to enable necessary changes in culture and practice.
  12. Experience of delivering training.
  13. Experience of managing, supporting and developing staff
  14. The ability to work in a self-directed manner and as part of a team, where developing and building good working relationships is key.
  15. A flexible and non-judgmental approach to people and work
