Volunteering for WERS
NOW RECRUITING!

WERS offers a wide range of volunteering opportunities.
Some volunteers work in the Befriending Scheme, the first designated scheme for refugees and asylum seekers in Newcastle upon Tyne. Since 2000, volunteers have provided invaluable support and companionship to clients who are lonely and isolated. The ongoing evaluation of the scheme has revealed how highly clients value the service.
'When we moved to the area, we didn't know anyone. Our befriender helped us to join many activities. We have met new friends from different countries and learned about English culture.'
Other volunteers train as support workers, seeing clients at the daily drop-in advice sessions at the project. There are also opportunities to work in the clothing store, teach English or provide administrative support in the offices. We also welcome volunteers who would like to fundraise on behalf of WERS.

“What they really need is a friendly face.”
Volunteers are given initial and refresher training to equip them for their work at WERS. WERS offers a variety of training modules, delivered both by WERS staff and other local organisations, which are tailored to the different volunteering roles. WERS volunteers receive ongoing support and find the work interesting, stimulating and immensely rewarding.
A befriender says:
'It has been a privilege to get to know a very courageous woman and to share some of her joys and sorrows.'
New volunteers are always welcome!
