Support Cuts for Children – Update

WERS was immensely relieved to hear that the appalling plans to cut asylum seeker children’s support have been dropped. It is most heartening that this volte-face was due to the outcry from refugee organisations across the UK. Thank goodness the voices of reason have prevailed!

Support Cuts for Children

WERS has just heard that the Government is cutting the support rate for asylum seeker children by £16 a week – an absolute disgrace! On 6 April the weekly Section 95 support for children under 16 will be reduced from £52.96 to £36.95, the same rate as for adult asylum seekers over 18. WERS already sees how asylum seeking families struggle to live on the small amount of cash from the Government. This brutal reduction will have a devastating impact on the health and well-being of children who have already been through so much in their short lives. Additionally, the rate for 16-18 year olds will go down by £2.85 and for adults over 18, support will go up 33p after nearly six years with no increase. Outrageous.
