Big WERS Weekend raises £3,495 for destitute asylum seekers

Big WERS Weekend

Thank you to everyone who supported the Big WERS Weekend. Money is still coming in and to date we have raised a wonderful total of £3,495 for the hardship fund. To this will be added a significant amount of Gift Aid.

  • WERS volunteers Pat and Carine raised a stonking £695! Pat hosted a lunch at her home and Carine held a coffee morning and baked an amazing amount of cakes – we think she should consider opening a coffee shop!
  • Students at Queen Elizabeth High School in Hexham held a ‘Big Brew’ and collected over £350. Brilliant!
  • Newcastle University student Josie organised a fundraiser at World Headquarters nightclub and raised a great £400!

Although the week’s primary focus was to raise money for the hardship fund, there was also a strong awareness-raising aspect to this initiative. WERS received excellent feedback from the fundraising packs sent out to schools, churches, businesses and individuals. The packs contained information about WERS, good news stories about clients who had at one time been supported financially from the hardship fund, a mythbuster about asylum seekers and, for the school and scout and guide packs, material for assemblies and teaching sessions. This resulted in some excellent new partnerships with local schools. Having held the fundraiser, a group of sixth form students from Queen Elizabeth High School then asked to visit WERS to learn more about the work we do and how they can help WERS in the future. WERS has also been asked to participate in their Global Day in the summer term.
